The City of Marion has 175 full-time and part-time benefited employees, and is a large seasonal employer. Positions include skilled labor, administrative, technical, and professional.
Marion has different procedures for filling openings in several city departments. Protective service departments (police and fire) are covered by civil service rules, and periodically test applicants to create a list of people eligible to fill future openings. Several other departments are also covered by civil service rules.
CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION
The purpose of the Civil Service Commission is to ensure fair practices in the appointment, promotion, termination, or demotion to or from a Civil Service position. In doing so, the commission oversees entry-level and promotional written tests and oral interviews regarding Civil Service positions.
Non-civil service positions are required first to be posted for a period of 5 days for potential internal applicants. After that time expires, the positions are publicized through the Cedar Rapids Gazette and the City website.
The City of Marion Personnel Policy applies to all city employees except police and fire department employees, unless specifically stated otherwise. The policy provides employment, promotion and benefits information along with discipline procedures and guidelines, including termination.
