Celebrate Arbor Day at Home

Post Date:04/23/2020 3:08 PM

Arbor Day in Marion has typically been celebrated with tree planting ceremonies and volunteer opportunities. This year, Marion’s Urban Forestry Division is encouraging residents to keep the spirit of Arbor Day alive with an at-home ID Your Tree Challenge.

The ID Your Tree Challenge invites residents of all ages to learn more about the trees located within their yard or close by.

To participate:

  • Post or send a photo or selfie of you and your favorite tree located near your home or in your yard.
  • Share the common name of the tree, its species and genus, trunk diameter (total circumference at 4.5’ height divided by 3.14) and an estimate of its height.
  • Use the What’s that Tree? Guide at www.arborday.org/trees/whattree/ to help identify your tree.
  • Share your findings on social media in the Facebook event on the Marion Parks & Recreation or City of Marion pages and use hashtag #ARBORDAYATHOME.
  • Questions or submissions may also be sent to the city arborist at mcimprich@cityofmarion.org.

Five lucky winners will be chosen randomly to receive prizes including: Plant a Tree SWAG, $20 in Uptown Marion Dollars or the grand prize, a 1.5” caliper tree of their choice.

Arbor Day is an annual observance that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. As a formal holiday, it was first observed in 1872, in Nebraska, but tree planting festivals are as old as civilization.
