Linn County Complete Count Committee Promotes 2020 Census

Post Date:03/05/2020 4:15 PM

The 2020 Census is coming up and Linn County, the City of Cedar Rapids, City of Marion, Cedar Rapids Public Library, and nonprofit organizations have teamed up to form the Linn County Complete Count Committee to encourage awareness and increase participation.

Linn County, the City of Cedar Rapids, and the City of Marion will acknowledge the importance of census awareness during special proclamation ceremonies:

  • Marion City Council Proclamation Thursday, March 5, 2020 5:30 p.m. Marion City Hall (1225 6th Avenue, Marion) Representatives of the Linn County Complete Count Committee will be participating
  • Cedar Rapids City Council Proclamation Tuesday, March 10, 2020 Noon, City Hall, third floor Council Chambers (101 First Street SE) Representatives from the United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) will be participating in the proclamation
  • Linn County Supervisors Proclamation Wednesday, March 11, 2020 10 a.m. Formal Board Room, Linn County Public Services Center (935 Second Street SW) Representatives of the Linn County Complete Count Committee will be participating

The census, conducted once every 10 years, is the constitutionally-required count of every person living in the United States as of April 1, 2020 (Census Day), regardless of age, race, or social class. This March, every household in America will receive a letter from the U.S. Census Bureau with information on how to respond. Residents can respond to the census by phone, mail, or online. Responses are safe, secure, and protected by federal law.

Participation Matters: The census determines how many representatives Iowa gets in Congress and how much federal funding Iowa receives for housing assistance, road improvements, hospitals, and much more. In Fiscal Year 2016, Iowa received approximately $8.7 billion through 55 federal spending programs guided by data derived from the 2010 Census. Communities that are undercounted are disadvantaged both economically and politically.

The Linn County Complete Count Committee is comprised of representatives from the following organizations: City of Cedar Rapids, Linn County, City of Marion, Cedar Rapids Public Library, Catherine McAuley Center, and United Way of East Central Iowa.
