Open Houses Planned for Zoning Map Update

Post Date:10/07/2019 11:14 AM

The City of Marion is hosting a series of public open houses to present proposed updates to the community zoning map. The proposed zoning map updates reflect the existing land uses in addition to the long-term goals and objectives of the Marion Comprehensive Plan. Residents, developers and members of the business community are invited to attend one or all open house meetings.

The meeting schedule is as follows:

Monday, Oct. 7, 5-7 p.m.
Marion Public Library, 1095 6th Avenue, Marion - Meeting Room A

Monday, Oct. 21, 5-7 p.m.
Marion Public Library, 1095 6th Avenue, Marion - Meeting Room A

Thursday, Oct. 24, 5-6:30 p.m.
Hills Bank, 3202 7th Avenue, Marion

Tuesday, Oct. 29, 5-7 p.m.
Lowe Park Arts & Environment Center, 4500 N. 10th Street, Marion

As part of the recently completed Code update, all City zoning districts will have new names; however, the permitted uses and development standards for many districts, particularly the residential districts, will not substantially change. Because the zoning districts are being renamed, every property in Marion must be “rezoned” into the new districts.

“The update intends to clarify the development standards, simplify the development process and increase transparency,” said David Hockett, principal planner for the City of Marion. “It will simplify zoning categories and better align zoning districts with surrounding areas.”

In addition to sharing information about the scope and process of the project, city staff welcomes initial comments on what will be an extensive public input process.

Questions may be directed to the Community Development Department at 319-743-6320 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
