Prevent Water Meters and Pipes from Freezing this Winter

The Marion Water Department maintains the water mains required to deliver water to homes and businesses. Property owners are responsible for the connection (tap) to the water main, the piping (service line) that carries the water from the water main, the curb stop box, the water meter, shutoff valves and pipes.

Taking these simple preventive actions can greatly reduce the threat of frozen or burst pipes this winter:

  • Locate the master water shut-off valve (usually located inside the property, just before the water meter) and carefully test it to make sure it will work when needed. If the valve is not operable, you will need to call a plumber for repairs.
  • Wrap exposed pipes with insulation. Pipes located along exterior walls or in un-insulated areas (such as attics, basements and crawl spaces) are most susceptible to freezing.
  • Keep your home’s temperature above 55° F, even if the house is vacant.
  • Protect outdoor faucets/hose bibs by disconnecting hoses and turning off any indoor shut-off valves supplying those faucets.
  • Properly winterize swimming pools and irrigation systems following manufacturer’s directions.

If a water main breaks or freezes, Marion Water Department will attempt to notify properties in the affected area. If you have not been informed that lines are impaired, lack of water in your home is likely due to pipes frozen within your home. Frozen pipes may burst and can result in water damage to your property. If you believe your pipes are frozen, you should immediately turn off the master water shut-off valve and contact a licensed plumber.
