On Tuesday, April 8 the Marion Metro Kiwanis were named recipients of the 2014 Service Club Award of Excellence by the Iowa Park and Recreation Association. The award was presented during the association’s annual conference. The group was nominated by the Marion Parks & Recreation Department.

The award recognizes a service group which has supported and contributed to the strengthening of programs and resources of leisure services; achieved through outstanding contributions to the parks, recreation and conversation movement within their community.

“The Marion Metro Kiwanis are a true community partner and very deserving of this award,” said Mike Carolan, Director of Marion Parks and Recreation. “The organization is committed to making a difference in the lives of children, and here in Marion their focus has been to provide opportunities for physical activity.”

The Marion Metro Kiwanis have partnered with the Marion Parks & Recreation Department on two major park improvement projects. The first was the installation of a new playground structure in Marion’s Lininger Park. The Kiwanis Club donated $15,000 for the construction of a Miracle Mini Mega Tower.

In 2013, the Kiwanis supported the construction of a combination basketball court and ice rink in Thomas Park. The $50,000 park improvement project included construction of a 100’ by 110’ concrete slab and the installation of adjustable basketball goals. The Kiwanis Club provided a $10,000 donation to the department for the purchase and installation of the adjustable goals.

The partnership will continue in 2014 with the development of a fitness trail in Hanna Park. The Kiwanis Club has designated $10,000 to go towards the purchase of outdoor exercise equipment to be placed along an existing asphalt trail within the park.
