Marion's Stormwater Management Program found to be in Significant Compliance

Post Date:12/22/2014 4:23 PM

The City of Marion is recognized by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System, or MS4, which means that stormwater that falls within the city is discharged untreated into local waterbodies. Marion has an MS4 permit from the Iowa DNR requiring the City to develop and implement a stormwater management program to reduce the contamination of stormwater runoff and prohibit illicit discharges.

Marion first received its MS4 permit in September of 2010, which must be renewed in 2015. Prior to this renewal, a representative from the Iowa DNR conducted an inspection of Marion’s stormwater management program to measure compliance. This inspection was conducted on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, and involved a review of city ordinances and policies as well as site inspections of City facilities and construction sites.

As a result of the inspection, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources found that the city of Marion is in significant compliance with its MS4 permit, and the permit will be renewed.
