UTILITY BILLING RATES

Marion's utility rates are detailed on the Utility Billing Rates schedule.  Below are brief descriptions of the various rates.

 

WATER

As more demands are placed on our water supply, the City recognizes the need to be responsible about water usage.  Our inclining rate structure charges users a higher rate the more water used. Please refer to the Utility Billing Rates schedule for detail.

As of July 2019, monthly minimum water costs for Marion and other communities - includes 200 CF:

Marion - $13.50
Cedar Rapids - $16.29
Cedar Falls - $13.28
Hiawatha - $11.68

Bulk water for contractors can be purchased at 101 8th Avenue.  Contractor must establish a billing account prior to purchasing water.  Please refer to the Bulk Water Price Sheet for costs.


WASTEWATER

Wastewater (sewer) treatment costs are tied directly to the amount of water consumed.  The City of Marion contracts with the City of Cedar Rapids Water Pollution Control division to treat the city's wastewater. Marion's rates are adjusted periodically to cover the costs incurred.

STORMWATER

To meet new state and federal mandates, the City of Marion has implemented a stormwater utility. An equivalent run-off unit (ERU) system charges the highest fees to the largest stormwater run-off producers. The program also includes a credit system to incentivize non-residential property owners for their stormwater run-off reduction efforts. Monthly stormwater utility rates include a basic service charge and a rate per ERU as stated in the Utility Billing Rate Schedule

 

URBAN FOREST

A monthly fee is charged to help maintain trees on City owned property and to provide for the disposal and re-use of tree-related materials.  

 

SOLID WASTE (GARBAGE)

This monthly fee is necessary to provide weekly curbside pickup of garbage and recycling materials.

 

DOOR TAG CHARGE

There is a charge of $32.10 (includes tax) if the Water Department has to hang a door tag at the customer's dwelling or business if the customer's does not pay their bill by the due date.  Customers are encouraged to call 743-6310 to make payment arrangements to avoid the door tag charge.  Customers that fail to pay their bill on time and fail to keep payment arrangements are subject to having their water service turned off.

FIXED CHARGES 

Our Schedule of Fixed Charges covers current fees for meters, service calls and various other charges.
