Indoor Bags Camp (Spring Break Week) CHILDREN GRADES K–5TH 

Looking for something to keep the kids busy during spring break? Look no further than this new kid friendly camp. Kids will first learn all the rules and techniques associated with the game through various skill building games and activities and then compete in an elimination style tournament. Limited number of spots available.

Indoor Golf Camp (Spring Break Week) CHILDREN GRADES K–5TH 

Indoor Golf 2017

An introduction to putting using the S.N.A.G. (Starting New At Golf) golf system. Children will learn proper stance and grip as well as proper stroke and pace. Kids will practice putting through a variety of obstacles and play rounds of "mini golf " to practice the skills. Limited number of spots available.

Lil' Leprechaun's Day Camp (Spring Break Week) CHILDREN GRADES K–5TH 

It’s Spring Break! Spend the afternoon at Lowe Park with our recreation staff as they lead the kids through games, crafts, snacks, and more. We may even go searching for that leprechaun and his pot of gold! Limited number of spots available.

EGGStraordinary Egg Hunt CHILDREN AGES 3–8  Egg Hunt, Easter

This event is always a hit with the kids and parents! Join other fellow egg hunters for a night your child won’t soon forget. Children will first create their own Easter craft(s), then they’re off in search of the mysterious glowing eggs. Who knows, there may even be an Easter Bunny sighting. The egg hunt will be outside, weather permitting. Please dress

NEW! Day Camps For Kids  CHILDREN GRADES K-6TH

The Marion Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with Linn County 4-H to offer some no-school-day and summer day camps right here in Marion. These day-long camps are educational and sure to keep your child's attention. Children should bring a sack lunch each day. Limited number of spots available each camp.

Camp 1: Cooking Up Science: Cookie Challenge (3rd-5th)

Do you like to cook or bake but maybe everything doesn’t always turn out as planned? Wonder what’s going on in the oven & why? During this workshop, we will get a chance to examine some cookie “flops.” We will try to answer what went wrong at the cookie factory by discovering how different ingredients work through fun and exciting hands-on experiments like: gluten balls, exploding marshmallows, and diving submarines. You’ll be amazed by the science that happens in the kitchen to make the delicious treats we get to make and eat!

MLB Pitch, Hit, & Run Competition CHILDREN AGES 7–14   MLB Logo

Major League Baseball's Pitch Hit & Run (PHR) is a FREE, 1-day event for boys and girls ages 7–14. PHR is the
official skills competition of Major League Baseball. Participants compete in either the Baseball Division or
Softball Division and have the opportunity to advance through four levels of competition including Locals, Sectionals, Team Championships and the National Finals at the MLB All-Star Game.

Youth Rugby Group 2017

Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in America. Join the Cedar Rapids Rugby Club for this new rugby instructional league. Learn all the skills, fundamentals, and terminology to begin playing rugby. This is a NON-CONTACT style instructional league. Kids will be divided into separate teams based on their grade. The first part of each night will be team practices with drills and skill building activities to enhance the understanding of the game. The last portion of the evening will be modified flag rugby games (non-contact).

Live Healthy Iowa Track Championships CHILDREN AGES 7–14  Live Healthy Iowa Track Championships Logo

Join the Marion, Hiawatha, and Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Departments for this local skills competition. The Live Healthy Iowa Kids Track Championships is a free, state wide event that requires no special equipment to participate. Local meets are hosted all around Iowa, giving participants a chance to compete in their hometowns and qualifiers competing in the state meet. Local meet champions will have the opportunity to participate in the state meet held in Marshalltown.

A paddle sport for all ages and athletic ability...Pickleball is like over-sized ping-pong played on a badminton sized court with a tennis net. With simple and easy to follow rules it is the perfect game for all ages to learn and play. Led by USAPA Ambassador and Iowa singles/doubles champion, Lyle Theisen, come learn all the rules, technique, and strategies to start playing pickleball yourself. This class explores the art of cartooning. We will use the art elements to dive into creating cartoons in many different mediums.

Session 2: Painting for Kids I

This class explores the many ways of painting. We will use tempera, watercolor, and acrylic paint to create works of art. They will be exposed to many painting techniques from the world of painting.

Session 3: Cartooning for Kids II (new material)

(You do NOT need to take session 1 cartooning to take this class)
This class continues the art of cartooning. You do not have to have previous cartooning to take this class. We will explore new and different projects in cartooning.

Camp 5: On Their Own & OK (4th-6th)

This is a workshop that helps build skills, maturity, and confidence in youth to safely stay home alone. Topics include: ideas for rules and a basic schedule for when your child is home alone, choosing and making basic healthy foods, procedure if someone comes to the door, techniques to handle squabbles that may occur between siblings. Child will leave with a family workbook to guide you through discussing expectations together.

Lil ' Tykes Basketball Camp CHILDREN AGES 3–8 

Lil' Tykes 2017Join the Marion Parks and Recreation staff this fall for this youth basketball program. This program is held outdoors at the Thomas Park basketball courts. Children will learn and practice a variety of basic fundamentals such as dribbling, shooting, passing, defense, and more through a variety of drills and fun skill-building exercises. There are no games played during this program.

NEW! Hot Shots Basketball Competition CHILDREN GRADES 3RD-8TH (FALL 2018/19)

Pick a partner and test your shooting skills and teamwork in this new basketball competition during Marion's annual Swamp Fox Festival. Teams will have 60 seconds to make as many baskets as they can from pre-determined spots on the court worth varying amount of points. Teams will be divided into 3 separate divisions: 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, 7th/8th. Top scoring teams will advance to playoff round where a champion from each division will be crowned.
Fee: $15, per team of two

Putt-Putt Indoor Golf CHILDREN AGES 3–6 

Indoor Golf 2017An introduction to putting using the S.N.A.G. (Starting New At Golf) golf system. Children will learn proper stance and grip as well as proper stroke and pace. Kids will practice putting through a variety of obstacles and play rounds of "mini golf" to practice their skills. Limited number of spots available.

Youth 5 on 5 Basketball CHILDREN GRADES 2ND–6TH (FALL 2018/19)

Youth BasketballLeague is divided into 2nd/3rd grades and 4th/5th/6th grades. Boys and girls play in separate divisions. This instructional league works on teaching the fundamentals of basketball and stressing the importance of good sportsmanship and having fun while playing the game. One hour practices held once or twice a week, beginning in mid-November, Monday–Friday. VOLUNTEER COACHES NEEDED!

Great Tree Decorating Contest CHILDREN AGES 3+

Our Christmas tree could use a little T.L.C. Help us decorate our tree at Lowe Park for the season. Fill, paint, color your ornament and leave it for us to put on our tree at Lowe Park. Ornaments will be voted on by a combination of staff, public and Facebook “Likes”.

For everyone that still believes! Someone has left candy canes around the Lowe Park Arts & Environment Center. Come help us find them all!  First, we’ll decorate some seasonal crafts and then the hunt is on to find every last candy cane.
