Last weekend in September

Join in the celebration of Marion's heritage at the 28th annual Swamp Fox Festival. A variety of events will take place in and around City Square Park including the Fall Marion Market, Swamp Fox 5K, a pancake breakfast, and the ever-popular Swamp Fox Parade.

The fun moves to Lowe Park on Saturday evening for live music at the amphitheater, food, bingo, kids activities and a grand fireworks finale.

Parade Info

The Swamp Fox Festival Parade, sponsored by Linn County REC and Marion Hy-Vee and Marion Hy-Vee Drugstore, is a Marion tradition and this year will be following a new route! The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30. This year’s theme is “Back to Our Future.” Parade entries could honor Marion’s past, its existing attributes or the community’s forward momentum.

Registration forms and full details can be found online or at the Parks and Recreation offices at Lowe or Thomas Parks. Cash prizes will be awarded in a number of categories. The parade is limited to 150 entries and the registration deadline is Sept. 15. Registrations will not be accepted the day of the parade.

5K & Little Fox Mile Registration

The Swamp Fox Festival 5K run/walk is set for Sept. 30 at 7:30 a.m. lining-up on 5th Avenue between Marion City Hall and Vernon Middle School. Prizes awarded to the first overall male and female finishers. Active or former military service men and women receive a $10 discount. Race shirts are provided for those who pre-register for the 5K. The registration fee is $20 before Sept. 1, $25 before Sept. 22 and $20 (without a shirt) up to the morning of the race.

The Little Fox Mile, a one-mile race especially for kids, returns in 2017. Register by Sept. 22 for $10, which includes a t-shirt and finisher medal. Late registration does not guarantee a shirt. Swamp Fox 3-on-3 YMCA Basketball Tournament

New this year! The YMCA is hosting a 3-on-3 basketball tournament as part of the festivities. The tournament will take place on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Thomas Park in Marion. The tournament will be organized in two divisions (5th/6th and 7th/8th graders) of up to 5 players each. Teams are guaranteed 4 games, which will be 20 minutes long or the first to score 30 points. Each game will have a certified official. Cost: $100 for the team, which includes 1st and 2nd place awards in each division. Essay Contest

The 2017 Swamp Fox Festival Committee along with The Marion Times are pleased to announce an essay contest (for anyone entering 3rd grade and beyond) as part of this year’s festival. Four winning essays will be chosen with each receiving a cash prize and his or her essay published in the Sept. 28 edition of The Marion Times.

Marion History – Then and Now                 
Imagine it’s 1940 and you’re at the corner of 7th Avenue and 10th Street.  What does the street look like? What shops and businesses are open? Tell us a little history about your favorite building or location in Marion. What used to be there?  What is it now? How has our community changed over the years?
