City Seeking Proposals to Relocate and Restore Two Brick Houses in Uptown Marion

Post Date:12/13/2018 11:35 AM

520 12th St MarionThe City of Marion is requesting proposals from parties interested in acquiring and relocating two properties; 525 11th Street and 520 12th Street in Marion.

Acquisition includes the structure only and does not include any portion of the lot the houses are on. The buildings are offered in “as is” condition. The houses are located on a block that is included as part of a proposed $67 million redevelopment project in Uptown Marion.

City leaders prefer to see the structures relocated from the current lot, restored and reused.

“It is important to the Uptown Marion Main Street organization to maintain the historic character of the district but also to promote economic vitality and urban living,“ said Brooke Prouty, director of the Uptown Marion Main Street District. “The Main Street Approach is ‘historic preservation within the context of economic development.’ Our hope is that these houses are moved and restored to both honor their history and make way for the next steps in revitalizing our commercial core.”

The Request for Proposals (RFP) and supporting documentation can be found at: www.cityofmarion.org/departments/engineering/construction-information/projects.

Marion City Council may provide financial incentives through historic preservation 525 11th St Mariongrants, local property tax abatement or other city contribution.

“The Uptown organization and City staff have advocated for a different approach to the redevelopment of this area that not only considers the unique aspects of these properties but also takes into consideration the public interest,” said Prouty.

If such proposals are not received to relocate and restore the properties, the City will accept proposals for demolition with salvage of historic features including the brick that was made in Marion.

Tours will be available upon request the week of Jan. 7, 2019. Responses are due by Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019. Requests for tours, additional information or questions related to the RFPs may be directed to the City of Marion Engineering Department at 319-743-6340.
