Prescribed Prairie Burns Planned on Select Dates through the Spring
The Marion Fire Department and Marion Parks and Recreation Department will be conducting a prescribed burn in City-maintained natural areas of Lowe Park on select dates through the spring season.
Prescribed burning is a common tool used in the management of natural areas and promotes the development of a diverse selection of native grasses, forbs, shrubs and trees. A seasonal burn plan improves native habitat and suppresses invasive species.
“Substantial care and planning have gone into these burn projects,” said City Arborist Mike Cimprich. “Our ultimate goal is to improve the vegetative environment and overall ecosystems at these locations.”
The burn plan has been approved and permitted by the Linn County Health Department – Air Quality Division, and the City will follow County requirements and guidelines. Daily weather conditions will be taken into consideration and onsite supervision will be provided by the Marion Fire Department for optimum safety.
