Hotel/Motel Funds Awarded to 15 Area Organizations
Each year the City collects a seven percent room tax on overnight stays at hotels and motels in the community. The funds are then redistributed through the Hotel/Motel Grant Program which awards exempt or non-profit organizations or agencies of a local government that work to increase tourism in Marion.
A committee consisting of City staff, City Council representatives and Council-appointed citizens review the applications, determine recommended funding allocations and make a recommendation to the council for use of the funds.
Last month, Marion City Council awarded $169,000 in hotel/motel funds to 15 area organizations.
The organizations receiving funding include:
- Freedom Festival 2018
- Giving Tree Theater
- GO Cedar Rapids
- Granger House
- Greater Cedar Rapids Open
- Marion Arts Council
- Marion Arts Festival
- Marion Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee
- Marion Chamber of Commerce
- Marion Historical Society
- Marion Metro Kiwanis
- Marion Parks & Recreation
- Marion Swamp Fox
- Red Cedar Chamber
- Uptown Marion
Local and visitor support of the Best Western PLUS Longbranch, Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham and Marion Motel directly contribute to this funding source.
