Marion Municipal Airport - Update Regarding Airport Layout Plan
A public meeting was held February 1, 2017 regarding a draft Airport Layout Plan for the Marion Municipal Airport. Held at the airport, this was the second meeting of its kind for this project. More than 60 people attended the meeting, learned more about proposed plans, and provided comments.
The Airport Layout Plan will be used to guide future improvements at the airport and aid in securing future grant funding for airport improvement projects. In fact, the Iowa Department of Transportation requires verification that any proposed projects are shown on a current airport layout plan on file with the Office of Aviation when applying for state funding for new construction of buildings or airfield expansion.
Once the City approves the Airport Layout Plan, the next phase of planning will begin, which includes creating an airport zoning ordinance and updating the City’s Land Use and Comprehensive Plan.
This is a long-range proposed plan with many unknown factors, such as available funding, final scope of improvements, updates to zoning, and more.
Below are two maps that were shown at the public meeting February 1. These maps show all contemplated improvements to the airport over the next 20 to 30 years.
